Timber Pilot w/ Leather Sheath

The Casterman Timber Pilot was created to provide an axe platform for splitting and limb processing chopping. There are customers in the northwest, north east, south upper Midwest, as well as other regions. The feedback has be great from all regions. The Timber Pilot, has a small team of testers (highly proficient with axes) that have been in the field running these babies for a couple of years. So the axe you’re getting is the culmination of not only my research over the years, their feedback has guided development as well. This is a confidence that translates to the customer.

SPECIFICATIONS

The Timber Pilot is hand forged by James Honaker in West Virginia. His skill has interpreted the design I set forth. We started with an old Tasmanian pattern axe that I had bought years ago, and worked out from there. We went through five prototypes, changing various things, moving the eyes up and back, changing out handle for length and thickness. One requirement was ergonomics. It has to feel good in the hands. It has to be balanced. It ended up leaning more towards a Hoosier pattern with a Tasmanian profile. The standard model is a four pound head, on a 28" haft with a slightly curved handle. Anything beyond this is considered special order, and subject to more cost. Here are the details.

  • Hand forged from 4150 steel
  • The axe head is completely normalized and hardened
  • The weight settled on is 4 pounds(specified weights are considered a custom order, and is additional cost)
  • Sharpened so sharp you can cut yourself looking at it wrong, seriously it’s REALLY sharp
  • All handles are sourced by us. That means we choose the trees on the log deck before they head to the mill.
  • Handles are air dried between 2-3 years
  • Handles are designed in-house and made one at a time in-house, augmenting machine and hand work accordingly.
  • Axes are hafted by hand, old school with a hardwood wedge.
  • After being hung, the handles soak in a 24 hour bath of boiled linseed oil.
  • Out of the bath they are subjected to a 15 point check list before being stamped, boxed up and shipped to your door. Signature is required on all axe orders.

THIS AXE IS NOT FOR BEGINNERS. IT REQUIRES A LEVEL OF EXPERIENCE IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN SAFETY

When you reach for an axe I want you to reach for mine.
